West Somerset Railway details...

The longest heritage railway in England, the West Somerset Railway offers a family day out to suit all ages, from toddlers to grandparents. Ten characterful stations are linked by 20 miles of line offering an unforgettable and nostalgic train ride through varied and beautiful countryside between Bishops Lydeard and Minehead. Passengers can look forward to glimpses of the Quantock Hills, Exmoor and South Wales in the distance, imposing Dunster Castle, villages and farms and the traditional seaside resort of Minehead.

Refreshments are usually also available at buffets and bars on scheduled trains. Car parking is available at key stations.

It may be possible to break your journey by hopping off at different stations to explore. Visit attractions, relax on the beach or enjoy a family ramble in the countryside. The West Somerset Railway website has a wealth of information to help you plan your day out. Find out about the different stations, what of interest is nearby and train times. At stations there may be museums, a café and stalls.

The kids will be intrigued by the fact that Doniford Halt is a request stop, requiring would-be passengers to stand on the pretty little platform and put their hand out to stop the train! Stop off at Washford Station to visit the Somerset and Dorset Railway Trust’s museum with relics and reconstructed signal box complete with levers to operate; to avoid disappointment, check this museum’s opening times as it is not open daily.

Only four miles from Taunton, the station at Bishops Lydeard is home to The Gauge Museum illustrating the importance of the railway in the past and displaying a working model railway (available on selected dates only) and various artefacts.

The railway is a country branch line of the old Great Western Railway. Railway and industrial heritage enthusiasts will be interested in the railway’s history and the historic steam locomotives, wagons, coaches and station buildings.

For extra fun, check out the programme of events which includes family treats such as Christmas specials and ’meet and greet’ days with popular children’s characters such as The Gruffalo and Peppa Pig, as well as galas, day excursions and Steam & Cream Tea Specials.

Discounts may be available for online ticket sales in advance and booking may be required for special events.

Please see the West Somerset Railway’s website to find out more and book tickets.
