Review of Wookey Hole Caves, Wells, Somerset

Wookey Holes Caves

February Half Term 2012

Visiting Wookey Hole for the first time in 30 years with my children aged 11, nine and seven, I hoped I hadn’t built it up to something it wasn’t! Happily we all had a greet time;  each one of us had a different favourite bit but certainly no one was disappointed.
Immediately directed to the famous caves for a group guided tour, we followed the dark path to find the witch’s ‘frozen’ form. The caves are full of historical and geographical facts but also beautiful lights so you can just enjoy the enormity of them. With the steady temperature of 11 degrees, you can smell the ripening cheese before you can see it- children passed through very rapidly with noses held! (Sold in the shop and delicious)
Our next stop was the circus show- an incredibly professional and talented group of students in a 30 minute show which resulted in my 11 year old returning an hour later to watch it again! The history of the circus and the caves are fascinating, but the children were on a fast forward to try their hand at paper making and then the Victorian arcade games. Converting cash to old pennies some big gambling took place which was very addictive!
The maze of mirrors is a very surreal experience- you are able to lose but still see your children. A few banged heads later we exited for a mad caper in the play area and rehydration, then outside for a round of pirate golf.
We had a great day, which was fun and educational; five hours just whizzed by and we left at closing time!
