I recently took my son and husband to see Charlotte’s Web at the Polka Children’s Theatre in Wimbledon.
Not having been to the Theatre before we arrived early, collected our tickets and waited in the dedicated children’s play area. It was delightful with an array of dressing up clothes, rocking horses, a reading corner and plenty of low seats and cushions for little ones, it was lovely to see the children playing so happily together. There is also a child friendly café and we had a quick drink there before the show.
None of us happened to know the story of Charlotte’s Web so it was a real treat to see it for the first time on the stage. The adaptation Joseph Robinette was cleverly produced with a small, but brilliant cast, each playing more than one character superbly; this enhanced the performance and added to the overall experience. The Set was extremely imaginatively designed which was transformed from scene to scene and made the whole experience unforgettable and truly enchanting. The final scene had a magical surprise… I’ll let you find out what this is!
After the show we went to look at the amazing Teddy Bear collection, which is situated upstairs in the theatre. It contained hundreds of Teddy Bears, including every famous bear you could think of, Padding ton, Winnie-the-Pooh, and even Mr Bean’s bear.
We all have a fantastic evening and my son adored the story and found the performance "awesome especially the spider". We will definitely be visiting the Polka Theatre again.
