The Rheged Centre – Mad Science Show – 16th February 2012
Mad Science, the world's leading fun science provider returns to Rheged with two spectacular science themed shows that will amaze and entertain. Be amazed by chemical reactions, flaming didgeridoos and dry ice foam showers! Be mystified by molecules, witness a hot air balloon in action and zoom across the floor on a hovercraft!
At 1.30pm see ‘Spin, Pop and Boom!’ and be spell bound with cool experiments from volcanic reactions to central frugal force demonstrations. Make foam shoot up in the air, watch as a hand appears to grow and see a swirl of steam dance like a genie out of a bottle and at 3pm see the Fire and Ice Show to discover cool chemistry and learn the basics of air pressure. Scissors will unexpectedly sizzle and carbon dioxide bubbles will pop as the chilling properties of dry ice are revealed. Be amazed when a ball is suspended over the audience and marvel at the strength of your own lungs with these radical air-pressure experiments.

Every day from Saturday 11th to Sunday 19th February the Town, Pit Village, Colliery Yard and Tramway will be recreating the atmosphere of the evictions in a colliery community, and remembering the miners who were evicted from their homes by Lord Londonderry. Eureka! – Alice in Wonderland – 11th to 19th February 2012
Discovery and exploration will take on a whole new meaning this half term at Eureka! The National Children's Museum, when the whole museum will spring into life with the amazing world of Alice in Wonderland. Members of the Eureka! team will be transformed into a roll call of characters from the famous Lewis Carroll children's book, including the Mad Hatter, the Queen of Hearts, the Cheshire Cat and, of course, Alice herself.
Themed areas of the museum will bring a touch of Wonderland magic and help children explore the wonder of discovery in all its forms.
You'll be able to join the Mad Hatter and the March Hare for tea at various times throughout the day. Alice will be wandering the galleries looking for the White Rabbit - who really doesn't want to be late! - and there will be a special round of croquet and other curious games in the Queen of Hearts' Garden. Eureka!'s February half-term activities are aimed at children aged from 0-11years. Hells Bells 'n Buckets of Blood… Pirates are coming this half-term to the Fleet Air Arm Museum and there will be some fearsome family activities. Children are encouraged to come in fancy dress. They'll be shown how to draw a pirate map in 'blood' using a quill pen and make a variety of Pirate accessories including cutlasses, telescopes and eye patches. Capin' Jack Sparrow lookalike and his scurvy shipmates will put on a stage show and sing-a-long and there'll be lessons in learning to live and speak like a pirate! To keep things in order the Royal Marines will be present with their climbing wall, which will be open to the public to have a go. Although the week is intended to be a lot of fun for the whole family, there will be a serious side too, with representatives from the Royal Navy's 815 Squadron, who will give a talk on the problems of modern day piracy. BeWILDerwood – Boggle Wish Bonfire – 11th-19th Febuary 2012
Families are invited to snuggle around the warming bonfire, make their wishes for the year ahead and try to guess the wishes of their favourite BeWILDerwood characters. Wrap your wish around a pine cone, close your eyes and blow on it three times, then roll it into the fire and watch the smoke drift high into the trees. A wonderful experience!
