Don't miss the outdoor World War One replica trench system if you're planning a day out with the kids in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. Located next to the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery in the city centre, it marks the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War in 1914. Atmospheric and thought-provoking, the replica trench system will offer visitors of all ages the chance to learn about the conditions experienced by soldiers on the front line. Free to view, open daily 11am-3pm, weather permitting.

Every Saturday and Sunday! Keen to get the kids out into the great outdoors? Interested in discovering more about the countryside and farming? Take the kids to Lower Drayton Farm for a great family day out. Designed for children of nursery and primary-school age, this friendly working farm attraction offers the opportunity to meet and learn about animals including goats, pigs, llamas, sheep, geese, ponies, chickens and more. As part of the experience, families will also be able to board the farm trailer ride for a fun and educational tour of the 600-acre beef and arable farm. Farmer Ray will guide you through what's going on at the time of year you are visiting and answer any questions you may have. Check out the nature trail, woodland walk and adventure playground. From July to October there's also the challenge of the Maize Maze. There are always plenty of fun seasonal craft activities available and the chance for children to have a ride on friendly ponies (weather permitting). The farm is also open weekdays during half terms and in school holidays. Open 10am-4pm (last admission). One of the fun family things to do at Trentham Gardens near Stoke-on-Trent is hiring a rowing boat to explore Lancelot 'Capability' Brown's lake at your own pace. Boats are available for hire from the Northern Jetty. Alternatively, treat the family to a cruise on 'Miss Elizabeth', an electrically-powered, 42-seat catamaran. A maize maze should definitely be on your list of family things to do this summer. Head for the National Forest Adventure Farm and puzzle your way through the ten-acre maze, designed in the shape of an enormous T Rex skeleton. With three miles of pathways, viewing towers, bridges and bones to collect along the way, it'll be great exercise for legs as well as brains! Join one of the Staffordshire Regiment Museum's WW1 personnel for a guided tour of the WW1 trench system, including its Regimental Aid Post. Find out how an injured 'Tommy' would have been treated, visit the officers' dugout and discover more about the tunnelers' underground war. Move on to explore the German trench. Children will be able to try on a reproduction uniform and handle a 1915 rifle. These Discovery Days over the summer are a great way for families to learn about the First World War.
