See attraction details23 January 2015 - 23 March 2016 - CHURCHILL'S SCIENTISTS AT SCIENCE MUSUEM
Explore the fascinating subject of Second World War technological advances as the Science Museum takes you to meet Churchill’s Scientists. This event is just one of the many marking 50 years since Winston Churchill’s death. This exhibition portrays the great Prime Minister through his involvment in cutting-edge inventions and scientific developments. It could be argued that his interest in such matters greatly helped Britain to win the war, with everything from the invention of the radar to the production of penicillin and antibiotics saving countless lives. A highlight of the exhibition is the examples of Britain’s top secret research into the development of the first atomic bomb. Many of the projects initiated by Churchill during the war didn’t flourish until sometime after, but those that did – such as molecular genetics, radio astronomy, robotics and nuclear power – have shaped the world around us. There are also some of Churchill’s personal possessions, including his green velvet siren suit and the cigar he smoked on winning the election in 1951.

For a brilliant kid’s day out bring them along to the Horniman Museum and Gardens and discover the content of the Museum’s unseen collection through artist Mark Fairnington’s paintings with Collected and Possessed. Funded through Art Happens come along and explore the lineage of animal and plant painting, and its relation to how humans have come to understand the natural world. Artist Mark Fairnington has spent the last fifteen years taking inspiration from visits to the unseen spaces of collections that are not on permanent display to the public, making paintings that reflect upon the different objects he has seen and discovered. Working alongside the Natural History Museum, The Wellcome Collections and the Horniman Museum and Gardens, Fairninton embarked on a curious project to shed light on forgotten treasures. Taking inspiration from the museum’s secret unexhibited natural history collection of stuffed animals. This exhibition explores the strange and unexpected, presenting paintings made by the artist together with material from the Horniman’s un-exhibited collections. See Fairnington’s paintings of large-scale insects, details of taxidermy specimens and depictions of entire storerooms on display in this unusual and intriguing exhibition.
