Project Tobong is a collaborative project led by British artist Helen Marshall and Indonesian artist Risang Yuwono, in a series of theatrical photographic portraits of the Ketoprak Tobong Kelana Bakti Budaya, one of the last remaining theatre groups in Yogyakarta, Java. Supported by Arts Council and British Council this is to be an element in the final presentation and achieve of the three yearlong project. Challenging conventional forms of social documentary, project Tobong aims to preserve and reinvigorate the ritual storytelling and performance. The project brings together a unique view of a vanishing traditional art form and community to a new audience, a combination for photographic arts and performance which bridges the gap between contemporary and traditional art practices.

For a brilliant kid’s day out bring them along to the Horniman Museum and Gardens and discover the content of the Museum’s unseen collection through artist Mark Fairnington’s paintings with Collected and Possessed. Funded through Art Happens come along and explore the lineage of animal and plant painting, and its relation to how humans have come to understand the natural world. Artist Mark Fairnington has spent the last fifteen years taking inspiration from visits to the unseen spaces of collections that are not on permanent display to the public, making paintings that reflect upon the different objects he has seen and discovered. Working alongside the Natural History Museum, The Wellcome Collections and the Horniman Museum and Gardens, Fairninton embarked on a curious project to shed light on forgotten treasures. Taking inspiration from the museum’s secret unexhibited natural history collection of stuffed animals. This exhibition explores the strange and unexpected, presenting paintings made by the artist together with material from the Horniman’s un-exhibited collections. See Fairnington’s paintings of large-scale insects, details of taxidermy specimens and depictions of entire storerooms on display in this unusual and intriguing exhibition.

Learn the story of the Brymbo Fossil Forest at this major exhibition running at Wrexham County Borough Museum until early June. The forest was uncovered in 2004 on the site of Brymbo steelworks. Wonder at the Stigmaria fossil, which is two metres high and has a root span of four metres. Discover the time when Brymbo was a swamp located near to the Equator and imagine the giant insects and huge plants that flourished in the tropical environment. Find out how these plants eventually became fossils and remained in position, to be found in the 21st century by workers removing coal from the steelworks site. A comprehensive overview of British Photographer Martin Parr’s work will be on display, from early Yorkshire-based black and white photographs of rural communities to his recent international examinations of consumerism. Drawing on the themes of labour and leisure present in the new Rhubarb Triangle commission. The Rhubarb Triangle new commission lies at the heart of the exhibition and comprises a series of photographs taken over the last 12 months in an area of countryside known as ‘The Rhubarb Triangle’ between Wakefield, Morley and Rothwell in West Yorkshire, which is famous for producing early-forced rhubarb. Capturing all aspects of the rhubarb business, from the back-breaking work of moving the rhubarb from field to shed, the freezing cold and exhausting labour of picking the vegetable by candlelight (or occasionally by head-torch), and the consumption of the rhubarb by coach parties and food tourists.

Sensory Stories is specially designed to be fun and accessible for the youngest visitors to Seven Stories in Newcastle. Story Catchers use sensory props, sounds and textures to bring stories to life through adventure, play and song and encouraging children to engage with books in new, imaginative ways.
