When the sun shines, there is nothing that creates a bigger cheer from the children than saying “Let’s Go to the Beach.” Here we have selected a range of Blue Flag beaches – a voluntary eco-label awarded to clean beaches - and some of Let’s Go with the Children’s favourite hidden gem beaches. The UK is blessed with a stunning coast with over 1200 beaches to visit and explore, offering hours of fun for kids of all ages.

So pack a picnic, grab the towels, swim stuff, sun hats and get the kids running round to gather spades and buckets. Have a fabulous seaside day and don’t forget the sunscreen.

Popular throughout the year as both a place of play and a place of relaxation. A great flat beach for ball games, flying a kite and building sand castles; discover wildlife in rock pools and spot basking seals in the water close to the shore. There are toilets, a daily lifeguard during the summer holidays and nearby cafes, amusements and all the amenities you may want. Closest to the city, Roker beach is an ideal place for water sports, with the Marine Activities Centre and other facilities close by. At the north end of the beach, the swathe of sand gives way to interesting geological structures, with rugged cliffs and 'cannonball' limestone rock formations.

For lovely days out by the sea in Pembrokeshire, head for Whitesands near St Davids. This beach won a Blue Flag in 2011 and has something for everyone. Relax on the wide expanse of white sand, paddle, surf or climb to the top of Carn Llidi, the craggy hill that overlooks the beach. There is a shuttle bus from the edge of St Davids in summer.
